Cul-de-sac
The night that Garrett came over was a turning point for me. I had known for a while that Edward was it for me, that he’s the one I want to spend the rest of my life with, but that night made me realize that I wanted it now. Our forever together couldn’t start soon enough as far as I was concerned.
It was with that thought in mind that I found myself pulling into the cul-de-sac where Edward’s parents live. This was going to be done right, and that meant meeting with his parents and getting their approval.
Hullabaloo
Esme was surprised to see me, but happily lead me into the kitchen and offered me some coffee.
“So, Jasper, what can I do for you?” she asked.
It was a simple question, one I had tried to prepare for, but instead of my carefully scripted response I blurted out, “I want to marry Edward.”
Esme stood stock still for about three seconds before she erupted in whoops of joy. Carlisle came running in to the room, a shocked expression on his face.
“What on earth is all this hullabaloo for?”
Esme giggled at him, and them sicked him on me. “Ask Jasper,” was all she said.
Gift
A few moments later I found myself seated at the kitchen table across from a beaming Esme, and a rather confused looking Carlisle.
Realizing it was now or never, I dived right in. “You both know that I love Edward, and I’m sure it’s not a surprise that I want to spend my life with him. So, Carlise....Esme.....with your permission....your blessing....I’d like to ask for the gift of Edward’s hand in marriage.”
Holding my breath, I waited for their response. Esme beamed at me, as tears slowly rolled down her cheeks. Carlisle looked a bit stunned and just stared at me.
Tingle
My fingers began to tingle, and my vision blur, before Carlisle found his voice.
“Wow...yes, Jasper......I’m honored that you came here to speak with us first. You know we both believe that you and Edward belong together,” he smiled as he stood and dragged me to my feet. “Yes, son. Of course you have our blessings.”
Carlisle pulled me into a hug, and soon enough I felt Esme’s arms wrap around me as well.
We hugged for a minute, then resumed our seats. Carlisle asked if I had thought about when and how I was going to propose. Smiling, I admitted I had no idea what I was going to do.
Cockamamie
Esme looked across the table at me, concern in her eyes. “Jasper, dear, please don’t tell Emmett until after you’ve proposed. If you let him know beforehand he’ll come up with some cockamamie and grandiose plans for how you should propose.”
Laughing, I quickly agreed with Esme. “There’s no way Emmett’s finding out about this until after the ring is on Edward’s finger.”
“Plus,” I said “Emmett’s been pretty busy lately with Paul. It seems to me that he may be working out his own extravagant proposal plans.”
Carlisle laughed, “Lord, can you even imagine what he’s going to do?”
Paramour
Esme asked if I had a ring picked out yet, and was excited when I said no. She offered to come with me and help find something Edward would like. Knowing nothing about jewelry, I readily accepted her offer.
We ended up at Tiffany’s where, after convincing the sales girl that Esme was not, in fact, my paramour, I settled on the Lucinda band. It’s a simple platinum band with a small diamond embedded in it. Esme agreed, it was perfect for Edward.
We left the store, happy and satisfied. My little blue box was tucked safely in my pocket.
